Movies, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 I didn’t originally intend for this Sci-Fi Month to be so movie-focused but my brain has run out of book-related ideas so here we go with another movie post! For last Spooky Month, I listed 10 of my favourite horror movies so I thought I would do the same for my favourite sci-fi movies! Man of Steel (2013) – I already talked in-depth about why this movie is one of my favourites in my ‘Why Man of Steel is Important to Me’ post, so go give that a read! 🚀 Why ‘Man of Steel is Important to Me’ Alien (1979) – I truly believe that Alien is a timeless movie and it’s one that can stand on its own feet even if – like me – you ignore the rest of the franchise. I may also be a little biased because Ridley Scott is local to my region but there’s nothing wrong with that. The Thing (1982) – I could gush about this movie all day because it’s another movie that I think is timeless. The practical effects have aged beautifully and still look better than some CGI and the feeling of paranoia and not being able to trust people is a theme that will always […]

Movies, Ramblings, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 Tomorrow (the 19th of November) is International Men’s Day and last year I marked the occasion by listing five reasons why Superman is my favourite superhero. This year, I want to continue on with that and tell you all why Man of Steel is one of my favourite movies ever. I am aware that this movie is divisive and has drawn the ire of many a gatekeeper, but other people’s opinions on the things that I love have never stopped me from enjoying them. I’m perfectly fine with people explaining to me why they don’t like my favourite things, but I do not have the time for people who think that I shouldn’t like something that they dislike. 🚀 5 Reasons Why I Love Superman CLARK IS AT HIS MOST HUMAN. It may seem absurd to say that an alien is at his most human, and I know that there are people online who completely disagree with me, but this movie version of Clark is the one who feels the most like an actual person, rather than a one-dimensional character. The most common criticisms I see towards this version of the character call him “mopey” or “emo” and cite that […]

Movies I Enjoyed More than Their Books

Lists, Movies

Hi friends 👋🏻 I recently saw this as a Top 5 Tuesday prompt and although it is not Tuesday (and I don’t usually participate in that meme), I thought I would make my own list of movies that I enjoyed more than the books they were based on. It’s usually a “rule” in bookish circles that the book is always better than the movie, but I wholeheartedly disagree on that. You will never see me drinking my coffee out of a mug that says “THE BOOK WAS BETTER” or carrying around a tote bag with that on. I have lots of reasons for liking the movie more than the book: sometimes it’s because I watched the movie first, sometimes the plot lags a lot more in the book, and sometimes the plot just suits a visual medium more than a written one. If someone else thinks that the book was better, that’s perfectly fine and I’m not going to try to change their mind, just explain why I feel the way I do. American Psycho American Psycho the movie is probably one of my favourite psychological thrillers ever and is one that I can watch over and over again without getting […]

Books, Lists, Top 10 Tuesday

Hi friends! 👋🏻 I personally love the prompt for this week because deep down I am a cynical and pessimistic gremlin who really loves to complain. That being said, there are actually not a lot of books that I have rated less than three stars and even fewer books that I don’t have anything nice to say about. That is changing today because I very easily found 10 (but actually 11) books that I can rant about. Prepare yourself for some walls of text because this post is a long one. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce – I have to start with the big one. There has never been a book or an author’s entire bibliography that I have hated as much as I hate everything that James Joyce has ever written. I understand that “write what you know” is one of the biggest pieces of writing advice out there (which I honestly think is a load of rubbish), but Joyce wrote an entire novel about himself. Portrait is about his own life with all of the names changed, and I would mind that if he didn’t have the most boring childhood I’ve ever read about. […]

My Favourite Books and Movies of 2020

My Favourite Books and Movies of 2020

Books, Lists, Movies

Hi friends! 👋🏻 2020 was a weird liminal space of a year that can only be split into “pre-lockdown” and “lockdown” so trying to remember what I read and watched has been very difficult, but from what I do remember, I can pick out some favourites that I want to talk about today! I didn’t read as much as I usually would last year and that’s fine because what I did read, I really enjoyed. As for movies, I watched so many movies that picking five favourites was the most difficult thing. I blame 31 Days of Horror for that because I managed to watch 37 movies in October and ended up completely wearing myself out. And now I’m crawling the walls wanting to go to the cinema which has been closed here since November thanks to tier restrictions and then national lockdown. I’ve been ignoring every single person who tries to say that “cinemas are dead” because I know that they are wrong. I just want to go see a movie and eat my expensive popcorn in peace. 🥺 books Vicious by V.E. Schwab – This was one of the very first books I read in 2020, way back in January […]
