5 Classics That Have Been Misinterpreted by Modern Audiences

Hi friends! 👋🏻 Lately I’ve been feeling pretty confrontational (which is odd for me) and it’s thanks to the title of a certain classic dystopian novel being thrown around by anti-vaxxers and their ilk. One thing that you learn when studying literature is that there are no objectively wrong interpretations, but I don’t know if I fully agree with that. There are some out there interpretations, but some people are absolutely wrong about a text and I want to say why I think they’re wrong without getting too analytical. If you didn’t know, I have a Masters degree in English and I like being able to use it as much as possible, whether that’s by rambling about things that people don’t care about, or putting it into blog posts. Before I jump right into roasting these interpretations, I want to briefly introduce the concept of Death of the Author, which was proposed by Roland Barthes. This concept states that the author’s intentions and background should hold no weight in how their work is interpreted. There are some issues that I have with this because while there are authors who just set out to tell a story, there are others who […]

Movies, Spooky Month, Top 10 Tuesday

Happy Halloweek, ghouls! 👋🏻 We’re almost at the end of Spooky Month and since this week’s prompt is a freebie, I wanted to share ten of my favourite horror movies with you all! I have watched almost exclusively horror movies since October of last year and I haven’t minded that one bit because I’ve gotten to explore the genre so much more than I have before and I even made a couple of new favourites. This past year has really proved to me that horror is my favourite genre now, which is in stark contrast to how I was ten years ago. Today I’m linking up to Top Ten Tuesday hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! The Thing (1982) – It took me a very long time to watch this movie because it has a reputation of being one of the scariest body horror movies ever made (at least, it does now because it was hated when it first came out), but I’m glad that I eventually did watch it because it lives up to that reputation. I don’t really get scared anymore, but The Thing is one of the very few movies that still scares me. Re-Animator (1985) – I watched this movie for the first time last […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 I may have taken an accidental short break thanks to my ever changing sleep schedule, but I am back in action and ready to act like nothing ever happened! It is no secret that I love my monsters. I like evil monsters, good monsters, neutral monsters, scary monsters, cuddly monsters, monsters who need a hug, monsters that will probably tear your ears out if you try to go near it, and monsters that are so giant that they would crush your house under their feet. Monsters are great is what I’m getting at here, so I decided that today I would talk about my favourite monsters and why they are so awesome. Also, look at this GIF. It’s incredible. Godzilla – Godzilla Of course, I have to start off with the King of the Monsters. And don’t try to argue with me that someone else is the King of the Monsters because you’ll be wrong. The Big G has a movie called King of the Monsters so it’s undisputed. What I love the most about Godzilla is that because he is a character that doesn’t talk and we never hear his thoughts (well, most of the time) he can […]

I have a very strong belief that the movies are not inferior to books, and movie adaptations are definitely not inferior to the books that they are based on. If you ask me, there is a layer of snobbiness to the idea that the book is always better with no exceptions and I don’t agree with it at all. If you like the movie more, then that’s fine. If you don’t want to read the book, that’s also fine. But that is not what I am here to talk about. Today, I wanted to share some of my absolute most favourite movie adaptations! I have read the books that most of these books are based on, and it’s not a big deal to me if I go my whole life without reading the book a movie is based on. Some fiction movies are based on non-fiction books that I will never have an interest in, and I’m not going to beat myself up over it. This movie is pretty damn problematic these days, but we have to remember that it came out in 1960 and the book in 1959 when attitudes towards mental illness and gender diversity were a lot […]
