5 Reasons Why I Love Reading

5 Reasons Why I Love Reading

Hi friends 👋🏻 Today I’m linking up with Top 10 Tuesday to share five reasons why I love reading! I tried very hard to come up with ten reasons, but unfortunately, my mind drew a complete blank. I would blame that on the fact that I’ve been writing a lot more than I’ve been reading these days, but I don’t really want to do that 😅

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

Reading is a calm way to consume a story

As much as I love movies, I have never experienced sensory overload from a book. Books don’t have loud noises or strobe effects, and the most they can do to upset me in a sensory way is have deckled edges. I don’t need to focus on anything in a book other than the words on the page so I can have my surroundings be as quiet and calm as possible. And if there is too much noise, I can always wear earplugs to block it out and then I can focus even more.

I often have days when I’m stressed from sensory overload and need quiet and taking the time to read in a quiet environment will always help with that.

Books can do things that most visual mediums can’t

There is no limit when it comes to imagination, and sometimes the best way to showcase an idea is to describe it with words. I think this is why some movie adaptations of books can be so disappointing to readers because something that is really cool and imaginative in the book can’t be depicted accurately on screen. This isn’t that much of an issue these days thanks to CGI being so much more widespread but even then, there are only so many things that a computer can do.

We can learn things from reading without feeling lectured to

We all like learning but nobody really likes feeling like they’re being lectured to or at. I’ve learnt a lot of things from fiction, and sometimes I’ve learnt more from fiction than I have from non-fiction.

A huge part of why I enjoy reading older books or books set in the past is because I can learn a lot of historical context from them without having to do a ton of research myself or take a history class. This is also why I enjoyed studying literature. Sometimes learning about the historical context surrounding the book and the time it was written can really help me to understand the story better.

Books are fun to collect

This may be a shallow reason to enjoy reading, but I am entirely against minimalism and I like having things. I may have too many books at the moment and I am planning on selling some of them, but I do still like having bookshelves filled with books that I can look at and organise.

Books are fun as much as they are an art form

As much as I can see the artistic merits of literary and experimental fiction, books are primarily a form of entertainment for me, and I assume a lot of other people too.

I love seeing authors be able to create art with words, and I’m often envious of them being able to do that because my strength in writing fiction is dialogue rather than painting a picture, and I appreciate authors who can create a strong and engaging story with strong characters.

Books are definitely a great comfort to have when I’m having a bad sensory day, that’s for sure 🙂

My son is forever trying to convince me that playing video games is JUST LIKE reading a book. No, no, it is not and I think you hit on the reasons why. I need to show him your list! Maybe it would help convince him 🙂

    Happy TTT!

I like video games too but it is nothing like reading a book 😂 Especially when you’re playing a game that doesn’t have a story at all like Super Mario.

Yes! It always great when a book doesn’t make you feel like a teacher is talking to you 🙂
