6 Gothic Books Older than Frankenstein You Should Know
Hello again! 👋🏻 The day that I am hoping to get this post up is my birthday (August 30) which also happens to be Mary Shelley’s birthday. If you know anything about me, you’ll know that I have both a BA and an MA in English literature, and my main focus of study was Gothic literature, which is still something that I love to this day. And while I mean no disrespect to the late Mrs Shelley, I have noticed that some people give her props that actually should be going to other people. While it is hotly debated whether or not Frankenstein was the first science fiction book (I personally don’t think it was since we have evidence of science fiction elements existing in older works), there are small groups of people who now seem to think that Shelley invented horror fiction or Gothic literature single-handedly. I am here to burst that bubble and say that she did not. Horror stories have always existed, even back when stories were told orally, and Gothic existed before she was even born. Take note, Shudder.
