Hi friends! 👋🏻 We’re now into summer in the Northern Hemisphere and I am not looking forward to it. I don’t need to explain how much I hate summer and hot weather in general but my hatred for it just intensifies as I get older (thanks to global warming). Usually, I centre my seasonal TBRs around specific genres and contemporary has been my summer genre for a long time now, but I’ve been reading so much horror and thriller recently that it’s all I want to read really. And that doesn’t bother me one bit because whoever said that horror is only for Halloween? The Texas Chain Saw Massacre took place in the summer, after all. House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson – Normally I wouldn’t pick a book about vampires for the summertime, but I’ve ended up picking five. Whoops. I’ve had a copy of House of Hunger on my shelves for a little while and since we’re nearing the end of Pride Month, I figured there’s no better time to read it. Because I am a vampire in real life. The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave – Another sapphic vampire book, but a YA one this time. I’ve never read […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 October is Black History Month in the UK (BHM and LGBT+ History Month are the other way around in the US) and today I wanted to highlight some books by Black authors and movies that are either directed by Black directors or have a predominantly Black cast. Unfortunately, a lot of the movies I found on my watchlist were made by white directors and I was hesitant to list them so I managed to narrow them down to 99% Black made. Also, it’s weird that I should feel the need to clarify this, but when I say ‘Black’ creators I mean people who are of African or Caribbean descent or are from Africa or the Caribbean. There are still a lot of people in the UK who use the term ‘Black’ as an umbrella term for anyone who isn’t white and UK Black History Month has been pushing back against that because British Asian people were being used in promotional materials. books House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson I’ve heard a lot of good things about Alexis Henderson but I haven’t read The Year of the Witching since witch books aren’t really my thing. This one is about vampires […]

My Autumn 2022 TBR

Hi friends! 👋🏻 We’re getting closer to autumn, which means that we’re almost at Halloween! Of course, if you’re anything like me, every day is Halloween because I have watched almost nothing but horror movies for two years now. If you’ve been reading my blog for a long time, you’ll know about Spooky Month and Sci-Fi Month, so those should give you the reasons why my autumn TBRs are always exclusively horror and sci-fi. Hide by Kiersten White – I just started reading this one this weekend so I don’t have much to say just yet! Reprieve by James Han Matson – I got this book from my library and while it sounds very interesting, my brain keeps gravitating away from the story to the social commentary side that I keep reading about. I love horror that has social commentary, so I’ll be taking my time with this one. The Woods Are Always Watching by Stephanie Perkins – I don’t follow a lot of authors on social media anymore, and Stephanie Perkins isn’t that active anyway, so I didn’t know that this book existed until I saw it on the shelves in bookshops. I really enjoyed There’s Someone Inside Your House so I’m excited to see how this […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 I haven’t made a dedicated TBR for Pride Month in a couple of years and I want to get back into the habit of making one every year. This time I didn’t want to do a Bingo card style of thing where I get Brownie points for including books or authors who identify one way or are from a specific group of people. I just chose books that I’m very interested and want to read, and if it turns out that the author isn’t cis or white, then that’s a good thing too. the miseducation of cameron post by emily m. danforth I am going to be going on holiday very soon and I don’t want to jump into something too heavy so this one sounds perfect for the end of spring. And even though it looks a little thicker than books I normally read, I have a good feeling I’ll be able to breeze through this one. cemetery boys by aiden thomas Am I a little miffed that the Kindle edition of this book cost pretty much the same as a paperback? Yes, but I’m trying to not dwell on it too much because at least […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 I have been reading a lot more adult fiction than I was before and working in a library is not helping my TBR to get any smaller since I spent most of my day coming across newer reading material while shelving. I’m not really venturing too far out of my comfort zone since I’m still going to my usual sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fare but that doesn’t bother me too much. You’re not going to find me reading books about young women in small English villages during wartime anytime soon, don’t worry about that. (No shade to people who like those kinds of books but they’re just not for me.) Gallant by V.E. Schwab Everything casts a shadow. Even the world we live in. And as with every shadow, there is a place where it must touch. A seam, where the shadow meets its source. Olivia Prior has grown up in Merilance School for girls, and all she has of her past is her mother’s journal—which seems to unravel into madness. Then, a letter invites Olivia to come home—to Gallant. Yet when Olivia arrives, no one is expecting her. But Olivia is not about to leave the first […]
