Hello again! 👋🏻 I took some time away from blogging (again) because life was getting to be very hectic, but I’m back now with a fresh mindset. I read 26 books and watched 141 movies, so picking my favourites was both a breeze and a chore, no thanks to my memory. I did manage to narrow it down to five each and I tried my best to actually remember things. It may not sound like it at times, but these are my favourites of the year 😅 This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron – I read both books in this duology and I liked the first book more than the second, but I think that’s because I forgot who most of the characters introduced at the end were and they ended up playing a much bigger role in the second book. Unfortunately, my poor memory plays a part in how much I enjoy a story. I haven’t read as much YA as I used to, but this one was still a good time. Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan – I’d never heard of the story that this book is a retelling of, but I did love the story of this […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 Horror may be a wonderful genre that tells all sorts of different stories from different parts of the world, but it is not perfect or without its faults. We all have things that we don’t want to see in our favourite genres whether that’s tropes, cliches, character archetypes, or even technical things that don’t have much to do with storytelling. Sometimes we even look back on stories from our favourite genres and see how far they’ve come and we’re glad that some tropes have died out over time. These are some of the things that I’m tired of seeing in horror and some that I’m glad to have been phased out! As always, it’s important to remember that a trope is not an inherently bad thing, it’s just a storytelling tool. What I list here may be something that another person likes, so this is all completely subjective. disability = bad guy My usage of ‘disability’ here is very broad because so many different disabilities have been used as ways of ‘identifying’ the villain to audiences. It could be things like scars, congenital abnormalities, learning disabilities, mental illnesses, and so on. Sometimes it feels like horror writers […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 October is Black History Month in the UK (BHM and LGBT+ History Month are the other way around in the US) and today I wanted to highlight some books by Black authors and movies that are either directed by Black directors or have a predominantly Black cast. Unfortunately, a lot of the movies I found on my watchlist were made by white directors and I was hesitant to list them so I managed to narrow them down to 99% Black made. Also, it’s weird that I should feel the need to clarify this, but when I say ‘Black’ creators I mean people who are of African or Caribbean descent or are from Africa or the Caribbean. There are still a lot of people in the UK who use the term ‘Black’ as an umbrella term for anyone who isn’t white and UK Black History Month has been pushing back against that because British Asian people were being used in promotional materials. books House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson I’ve heard a lot of good things about Alexis Henderson but I haven’t read The Year of the Witching since witch books aren’t really my thing. This one is about vampires […]

Why I Love Horror

Hi friends! 👋🏻 When looking through my past Spooky Month schedules, I noticed that I’ve done posts about why I love monsters, vampires, and also horror subgenres, but I’ve never made a post talking about why I love the horror genre as a whole. I haven’t been a lifelong horror fan because I was an absolute weenie as a child (I blame the undiagnosed autism) and really eased myself into the genre as a teenager. Weirdly, coming up with my reasons for being a horror fan was harder than I expected it to be because once I think of things, my mind goes blank. horror is cathartic Admit it, we all love seeing bad people get what’s coming to them, don’t we?  That feeling of relief once all the scary stuff is over and the day has been saved is one of the best ever and nothing can beat it for me. Even if we know that the bad guy is going to come back, at least they’re gone for now so we can get ready for the next time we end up going through the wringer to get to that relief. horror can be deeper than just blood and […]

Hi friends! 👋🏻 We’re getting into the later part of the year, which means that there are so many more movies that I want to see! There haven’t been a lot of movies I’ve wanted to see since the spring since the summer tends to get dominated by action movies and franchises that I’m just not interested in. There’s nothing really wrong with that since people like those movies, but they’re just not for me so there are years where I end up going months without seeing a new movie. Because I love doing challenges that will turn my brain into mush, this year I’m not doing 31 Days of Halloween, but 92 Days of Halloween. The goal of this challenge is to watch 100 horror movies in 92 days, and they can only be movies that you have never seen before. I like to rewatch my favourites in the run-up to Halloween so it’s going to be tough to watch 100 that I’ve never seen before. This GIF here will be me by the end of October: nope I know this movie has already been released in the US, but we still have another week to wait in the UK and […]
