Hi ghouls, long time so see! đŸ‘‹đŸ» I am always looking for ways to diversify my reading and watching habits, especially when it comes to horror. Different cultures have different things that they find scary and it’s always fascinating to learn about past and present social issues that influence stories as well as folklore and mythology. Originally, this post was just about Japanese horror but I decided to branch out and look for horror from all over Asia and from Asian diaspora people all over the world. Asia’s a big place with a huge amount of different cultures so it’s not fair to narrow what I’m looking for down to just one single country. An unfortunate thing I ran into when compiling this list was a big lack of South Asian horror and almost next to nothing from West Asia or the Middle East. A lot of people still forget that Asia is not just China, Korea and Japan so a lot of what I found is from East and Southeast Asia. (i did a class on orientalism in literature when i was in university and one classmate complained the whole time that we didn’t look at any chinese literature, […]

Hi friends! đŸ‘‹đŸ» October is Black History Month in the UK (BHM and LGBT+ History Month are the other way around in the US) and today I wanted to highlight some books by Black authors and movies that are either directed by Black directors or have a predominantly Black cast. Unfortunately, a lot of the movies I found on my watchlist were made by white directors and I was hesitant to list them so I managed to narrow them down to 99% Black made. Also, it’s weird that I should feel the need to clarify this, but when I say ‘Black’ creators I mean people who are of African or Caribbean descent or are from Africa or the Caribbean. There are still a lot of people in the UK who use the term ‘Black’ as an umbrella term for anyone who isn’t white and UK Black History Month has been pushing back against that because British Asian people were being used in promotional materials. books House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson I’ve heard a lot of good things about Alexis Henderson but I haven’t read The Year of the Witching since witch books aren’t really my thing. This one is about vampires […]

Hi friends! đŸ‘‹đŸ» We’re going into the best time of the year for me, not just because of Halloween but because so many movies are being released in cinemas in the next few months. I couldn’t be happier that movies are being released in cinemas because renting brand new releases is so expensive in the UK thanks to us not having HBO MAX. I waited until Wonder Woman 1984 came out on Blu-Ray to watch it rather than rent it through my TV provider because owning a physical copy was cheaper than renting it. Plus, I’m just not meant for watching everything at home because I’m a fidgety person. Cinemas force me to actually focus on the movie while at home I have my phone with me and I’ll end up scrolling through Twitter or constantly pausing it to pee when I don’t need to. But enough about my pandemic viewing gripes, I want to talk about some movies! THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK  I’m cheating because by the time this post goes live the movie will already be out in the UK. I have no idea how many years it’s been since I watched The Sopranos but when I saw the trailer for […]

One thing that I am always on the lookout for is horror movies that are not based on books by Stephen King. Not to knock Stephen King, I’m sure he’s a fine writer whose books I’ve never finished, but it is far too easy to just fall back to his works and movies based on them when there are so many other books out there that have been made into movies. Some of those are classics and some are a little more obscure, but it’s always great to find horror by writers who aren’t Stephen King. My movie watchlist is just like my TBR in the way that it is constantly expanding and overflowing. As of right now, I currently have two movie jars (one for all genres and one for October) and I’m going to make another one for Sci-Fi Month next month. It’s very obvious that I don’t have any self-control 🙈 The Exorcist (1973) According to pretty much everyone, not only is The Exorcist considered to be the scariest movie ever made, it is a pretty tough movie to watch even though the full-on horror doesn’t happen until the second half. 13-year-old me would not have even considered wanting to […]

Movies I Want to Watch Based on Books I Haven’t Read

Movies I Want to Watch Based on Books I Haven’t Read

There is this rule in the bookish community that I will always think is bogus and should be broken if you want to break it, and that is that you must always read the book before you watch the movie.  I personally think that this is a silly rule because you can consume media in any way that you want to and there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it (unless you’re stealing, then that’s definitely wrong). There are many reasons why we watch movies based on books without having read the book like we didn’t know it was based on a book until later, we were too young to read the book when we first watched the movie (which is what happened when I first watched The Princess Diaries), or we may have absolutely no interest in reading the book at all. Which may be sacrilegious to some people, but is perfectly understandable to me. It is not a crime to not want to read the book that a movie is based on. How many people have read the book that Mean Girls is based on? Probably not that many because it’s based on a self-help guide. Treasure Planet Based […]
