Books, Lists, Movies, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 If you couldn’t tell, my two favourite genres are sci-fi and horror, so when the two are combined, I’m always going to be interested. Picking a list of my favourites was oddly easy for movies, but a lot harder for books. It seems that I need to seek out sci-fi horror books more often to see what books are out there. Personally, I think that sci-fi and horror make for a good combination because what’s scarier that what we don’t know? And science is all about finding out things we don’t know, whether that’s out in space or here on Earth. Sometimes Earth is scarier… alien (1979) The general consensus among sci-fi fans is that Aliens is the best movie in this series, but I completely disagree with that. I much prefer the atmosphere and the characters in Alien and the ‘haunted house but in space’ theme has always appealed to me more than the action-oriented Aliens. Yeah, there are more aliens and the Queen is in that one, but I just don’t care for the characters: the Marines are all total meatheads and Newt committed the cardinal sin of being a child in a movie. But anyway, Alien is always the movie that […]

Books, Sci-Fi Month, TBR Lists

Hi crew! 👋🏻 November is Sci-Fi Month and time for me to devote my reading and watching habits to the genre. I didn’t participate last year due to being very busy with assignments and whatnot, but that’s all behind me now so I have time to come back to blogging! I didn’t go for a particular theme with this year’s TBR, but rather books that I’ve been meaning to read for a long time or suit my current goals of having more diverse reading habits, whether that’s intentional or not. i am legend by richard matheson Naturally, I’m still in the horror mood (when am I not) and wanted something that is both sci-fi and horror and I Am Legend was the first thing to come to mind. I’ve just started reading this one so I don’t have a lot to say about it so far, but it’s one that’s been on my general TBR for a very long time. this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone Like a lot of people, I came to know this book because of someone on Xitter called ‘Bigolas Dickolas’, and as a proud member of the Funny Xitter Display Name […]

The Great Godzilla Movie Marathon: Part 5 – The American Movies

The Great Godzilla Movie Marathon: Part 5 – The American Movies

Movie Reviews, Movies, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 We finally made it to the American Godzilla movies! I started this project back in September and now we’re at the end of November and I’m finally finished. Should I be proud to say that I watched all forty Godzilla movies in three months? Probably not but I sort of am. When you have an internationally famous and beloved pop culture icon like Godzilla, Hollywood is of course going to come knocking. Even though it took 44 years for Hollywood to give the world an original American Godzilla, that didn’t stop them from recutting some of the Japanese movies and Americanising them for post-war Americans whose government was occupying Japan at the time and enacted heavy censorship laws. This meant that Japanese filmmakers weren’t allowed to make movies about the military or criticise the US. Godzilla was created by working around the censorship laws and it’s somewhat ironic that Hollywood ended up clamouring to make their own version of the character, with varying results. I was introduced to the franchise by the American movies so I can’t really be too hard on them, but there will always be an exception to that. Unlike the last four posts, I didn’t have to watch […]

The Great Godzilla Movie Marathon: Part 4 – The Reiwa Series

The Great Godzilla Movie Marathon: Part 4 – The Reiwa Series

Movie Reviews, Movies, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 We’ve reached the end of the Japanese movies with the Reiwa series! Despite technically starting in the Heisei era (1989-2019), the Reiwa series is the most recent and current Godzilla series and also the shortest with only four feature-length movies so far. We do have the Godzilla Singular Point anime on Netflix and three short films that are available on YouTube, but I’m not going to talk about those. There don’t appear to be any plans for live-action Godzilla movies, but my fingers are crossed considering that Toho could just be keeping it a secret. For the last time, I watched these movies in their original Japanese with English subtitles, but I didn’t have to go searching across the internet for them because I own Shin Godzilla on DVD and the three anime movies are Netflix exclusives. At last! The three Netflix movies are available dubbed in English and other languages, but I still went for the Japanese track because why break tradition? SHIN GODZILLA Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi Released 2016 Run time: 120 mins (2 hrs) My Rating – Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or […]

Movies, Sci-Fi Month

Hi crew! 👋🏻 I didn’t originally intend for this Sci-Fi Month to be so movie-focused but my brain has run out of book-related ideas so here we go with another movie post! For last Spooky Month, I listed 10 of my favourite horror movies so I thought I would do the same for my favourite sci-fi movies! Man of Steel (2013) – I already talked in-depth about why this movie is one of my favourites in my ‘Why Man of Steel is Important to Me’ post, so go give that a read! 🚀 Why ‘Man of Steel is Important to Me’ Alien (1979) – I truly believe that Alien is a timeless movie and it’s one that can stand on its own feet even if – like me – you ignore the rest of the franchise. I may also be a little biased because Ridley Scott is local to my region but there’s nothing wrong with that. The Thing (1982) – I could gush about this movie all day because it’s another movie that I think is timeless. The practical effects have aged beautifully and still look better than some CGI and the feeling of paranoia and not being able to trust people is a theme that will always […]
