Dipping My Toes Back into Paranormal Romance

Hi friends! 👋🏻 When I first started blogging (which was a very long time ago now, yes I’m old), my favourite genres were YA dystopian and YA paranormal romance. And there were a lot of books in those genres. So many that I eventually got burnt out on them and almost swore them off forever. Until recently that is. I’m still not the biggest lover of romance books because I am very picky with what I want to see in a romance story. I don’t like enemies-to-lovers stories, miscommunication bugs the hell out of me, I need the book to explicitly tell me that it has BDSM or other kinks in it, dark romance isn’t for me, and I hate bully romances. Very picky indeed.

I’m not that observant of trends, but I’ve noticed a little trend in fluffy paranormal romances for adults recently, and that is something that I want to try. I don’t want every paranormal romance to be pure fluff or else my teeth would fall out, but that is what I’m in the mood for these days. Especially when they’ve got vampires in them.

Book cover for 'My Vampire Plus-One' by Jenna Levine. Two people - one male, one female - walk up a flight of stairs against a split background. The male character wears sunglasses and a suit and has a bat-like shadow behind him. The female character wears a blue dress and heels.

Ah, yes, the book that started the idea of this post. I came across My Roommate is a Vampire by the same author by chance when I was just browsing the shelves in my local nerd shop that also sells books (they only sell horror, fantasy, and sci-fi novels, but they have comics of all genres). I have a tendency to get tunnel-vision when I see that something has vampires in it, and although romance and romcoms aren’t genres that I normally gravitate towards, I had to pick it up. Was it the best book I’ve ever read? No, but it was cute and a little steamy, which is what I wanted it to be.

My Vampire Plus-One is the second book in the series, and I’m glad that it follows different characters because the first one was an open-and-shut story, it doesn’t need to have a sequel. As soon as I’m able to, I will be grabbing a copy for myself!

Book cover for 'Enchanted to Meet You' by Meg Cabot. A road winds around the cover against a purple sky. A silhouette of two people riding a motorcycle can be seen in the bottom right corner.

Meg Cabot is a childhood favourite of mine (or teenage favourite, more accurately) and I always forget that she writes books for adults. Enchanted to Meet You is a book that I found on our library shelves and isn’t one that I would normally go for since books about witches and magic don’t normally do anything for me, but since it’s a Meg Cabot book, that got me interested. It has been a very long time since I read one of her books (I think it was the final book in the Mediator series) but I’m always happy to revisit an old favourite author.

Book cover for 'The Damned' by Renée Ahdieh. The top half of a human skull can be seen against a black background with flowers surrounding it.

It has been a few years since I first read The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh but I own most of the series in hardback so I figured I should read them at some point. And me wanting to get back into PNR is that point. I know that I said I was going for light and fluffy books, but sometimes I want to delve into the darker and more serious stuff, and vampire books are the perfect outlet for that.

Another one that sounds like its on the more serious side, I remember seeing mentions of this book on The Bad Place and being quite interested in it, but I completely forgot about it until now. I always love seeing vampires in cultures other than European and I believe this one is set in Mexico. I’ve read one other vampire book set in Mexico, which is Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors. This one is currently £3.99 on Kindle so I’ll definitely get it as soon as I can! Once I remember to charge my Kindle that is..

  1. One not on your list that I actually consider to be more paranormal romance than what’s usually categorized (fantasy romance) is The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen. I’d highly recommend that one. A Cruel Thirst was good, but a little on the dramatic side for my taste. I hope you enjoy any paranormal romances you pick up.
