Hi friends 👋🏻 Today is finally the last day of summer and I couldn’t be more excited. Summer is my least favourite season because it gets so humid where I live and I am that rare breed of person who gets seasonal depression in summer rather than winter. I just thrive better in colder weather. Plus, we’re going into Spooky Season which is always a big plus. If you have been following me around the blogosphere for the ten years that I’ve been blogging (👵🏻) you’ll know that my autumn TBR is split into two: horror for the beginning of the season and sci-fi for the end because I have my own Spooky Month event every October and I participate in Sci-Fi Month every November. Is it restrictive to only read two genres in one season? Possibly, but that’s the way I like to do things. I’m linking up to Top 10 Tuesday over at That Artsy Reader Girl today! Lost Souls by Poppy. Z Brite (Billy Martin) – I told myself that I would read this book at the beginning of the year and I’m finally getting closer to reading it! This book has been on my TBR for years and years and […]

10 Books I Bought Just for the Cover

Books, Top 10 Tuesday

Hi friends 👋🏻 I am not ashamed to admit that I can be shallow and will definitely pick up a book because I think the cover is pretty. It can be a gamble because there is always the chance that the insides don’t match the outsides, but that is a risk that I’m willing to take. I need to have the pretties, I just do. I definitely go through different phases and what I like on book covers does change a lot, but as long as a cover is aesthetically pleasing to me, it’s all good. Today I’m linking up to Top 10 Tuesday over at That Artsy Reader Girl! My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix – I’m not the biggest fan of things about exorcisms or demons because they can come off as overwhelmingly Catholic, but I am a huge sucker for covers being made to look like old rental VHS boxes. I didn’t grow up with Blockbuster because my parents were members of an indie video rental shop, but I do have very fond memories of renting videos and even playing my own videotapes that I got for birthdays and Christmases. Mina and the Undead by Amy McCaw – Another VHS book cover! I […]

5 Reasons Why I Love Reading

5 Reasons Why I Love Reading

Books, Top 10 Tuesday

Hi friends 👋🏻 Today I’m linking up with Top 10 Tuesday to share five reasons why I love reading! I tried very hard to come up with ten reasons, but unfortunately, my mind drew a complete blank. I would blame that on the fact that I’ve been writing a lot more than I’ve been reading these days, but I don’t really want to do that 😅 Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Reading is a calm way to consume a story As much as I love movies, I have never experienced sensory overload from a book. Books don’t have loud noises or strobe effects, and the most they can do to upset me in a sensory way is have deckled edges. I don’t need to focus on anything in a book other than the words on the page so I can have my surroundings be as quiet and calm as possible. And if there is too much noise, I can always wear earplugs to block it out and then I can focus even more. I often have days when I’m stressed from sensory overload and need quiet and taking the time to read […]

Books, Lists, Top 10 Tuesday

Hi friends! 👋🏻 I personally love the prompt for this week because deep down I am a cynical and pessimistic gremlin who really loves to complain. That being said, there are actually not a lot of books that I have rated less than three stars and even fewer books that I don’t have anything nice to say about. That is changing today because I very easily found 10 (but actually 11) books that I can rant about. Prepare yourself for some walls of text because this post is a long one. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce – I have to start with the big one. There has never been a book or an author’s entire bibliography that I have hated as much as I hate everything that James Joyce has ever written. I understand that “write what you know” is one of the biggest pieces of writing advice out there (which I honestly think is a load of rubbish), but Joyce wrote an entire novel about himself. Portrait is about his own life with all of the names changed, and I would mind that if he didn’t have the most boring childhood I’ve ever read about. Hi friends 👋🏻 Spring is almost here and we are almost into one of my least favourite times of the year (I am Squidward in the gif below). I don’t try to make it a secret that I don’t enjoy warmer weather because it makes me grumpy and depressed and it makes my eyes sting so the way I can stop myself from feeling too down in the dumps is by reading. Recently I’ve been really into dark things and I’ve been in a total horror mood since October thanks to 31 Days of Horror. I want to pull myself out of that a little but how successfully I’ve planned to do that is up for debate 😅 The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe – I haven’t read any YA mysteries or thrillers in a long time and I want to get back into the genre, so I figured what better way to do that than by reading one that is a recent release? Also, I believe this book is queer so that is also a big plus. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – I’ve seen a lot of love for Becky Chambers’ books, […]
